Amy Gledhill: My experience of the Funny Women Awards

The plans you make at 4am, after a shandy or two, are not always the most advisable. They are however, bold and undaunted, sincere and effervescent, utterly preposterous and potentially dangerous. It may not shock you then, that my decision to finally give stand-up comedy a try came under these exact circumstances. (Okay, the ‘shandy’ maybe a slight fib as it did not contain all that much lemonade. Or any. Or any lager. Just gin. There was lots of gin.)

We’d like to explain why we’re keeping the registration fee for the Funny Women Awards. In past years there has been some industry comment about our decision but we would like to emphasise that we don’t charge people to perform and we have no intention of exploiting anybody- this is the antithesis of what we strive to achieve. We use the administration fee to allow us to book quality venues and provide a support structure with constructive feedback for participants, which helps us to achieve our objective of helping women find and develop their voice.

Real Funny Women Award goes to Coppafeel! Founder

Every year, Funny Women asks you to nominate a Real Funny Woman whose innately upbeat attitude to life never fails to make you smile.

This year, Kris Hallenga was nominated for turning her harrowing experience of being diagnosed with breast cancer into a full-time mission to encourage her friends, and her generation, to get to know their boobs.

At 23, Kris was told that not only did she have breast cancer, but that it had spread to her spine. Kris was, and three years later, still is is, at stage four, the most advanced type of cancer. There is no stage five.

However, Kris turned her shock and anger into pure kick-ass by launching the breast cancer awareness charity…

The 10th Anniversary Funny Women Awards was summed up brilliantly by Shane Allen who chaired the judging panel: "Well done on a very successful year - great finalists and a very enjoyable event."

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves and that coming from the current head of comedy for Channel 4 and soon-to-be controller, comedy commissioning for the BBC, is an even greater accolade!
